Thematic priorities areas

Nutrition: Cafdaro aims to reduce morbidity and mortality related with malnutrition among the under-fives and pregnant and lactating women (P&LW) in the project area.

Water and sanitation: Cafdaro has technical knowledge and experience in the operation, maintenance and management of various gravity and pumped rural water supply systems including earth pans / dams, boreholes, shallow wells, rock and roof catchments, run-off tanks, river bed infiltration systems and direct river abstractions. The organization is familiar with Water and sanitation coordination system in the district and national level and various stakeholders that are pertinent of the success of the sector.

Agriculture and Livelihoods Development: Cafdaro is experienced in water conservation and run-off water harvesting for agriculture and livestock development such as construction of check dams/dykes for land flooding for crop production and ground recharging for increase of wells for vegetable production, Fodder production and Poultry Production.

Community Development: Cafdaro has experience in community mobilization, civic education, advocacy and appraisal using participatory integrated development with a basket of participatory tools to assess potentials and problems and come up with a community action plan (CAP) and formulation of project proposals

Emergency Response: Cafdaro has undertaken emergency response planning and resource mobilization from private, institutional and international community and established Disaster response teams, setting up of operation centers and coordination mechanisms including Rapid Repair of boreholes, water trucking, hygiene and sanitation promotion and water treatment in water source and household level in emergencies. The organization has distributed NFIs/shelter, Emergency Food, and Food for work, Seeds, Provision of Irrigation Pumps, agricultural hand tools, construction of check dams, semi-circular bands, stone pit line and canal rehabilitation.

 Basis of comparative advantage

The organization has specific comparative advantages that enable it to respond to the complexity of needs of crisis-affectedpopulations in south and central Somalia as follows:

  • Willingness to assume and provide effective leadership in disaster, humanitarian and relief situations in south and central Somalia, in particular the Gedo region;
  • Ability to work at the grassroots level to address basic human needs and to operate in remote areas that are marginalized
  • Demonstrated development consequences for vulnerable populations in the Gedo region and seek solution on the same;
  • Capacity for projects to be sustainable even after project funding ends.

Stakeholders

Primarily CAFDARO currently works with central and regional government authorities, village elders, youth groups and local leaders to implement its activities. At the field level, CAFDARO works very closely with regional health authorities, local CSOs and international NGOs who are members of the Gedo Nutritional Cluster Coordination meetings as well as the Gedo FSC meetings. CAFDARO frequently chairs the coordination meetings and have severally been tasked with writing and disseminating meetings on behalf of the cluster members. At the Nairobi level, CAFDARO works with other international and local organizations in the nutrition, health, wash, and agriculture clusters. The CAFDARO strategic plan 2013 – 2015 has taken into account the importance of working with other local and international stakeholders to ensure implementation of initiatives in the Gedo region.

Network/ Cause Membership: CAFDARO is an active member of the Nutrition, WASH, Agriculture and Livelihood, Education, NFI/Shelter and Protection clusters in the Nairobi and in the Gedo sub-national coordination meetings. CAFDARO is the Gedo nutrition focal point for coordination and information sharing since May 2011 up to July 2015, and the current nutrition cluster co-chair in Nairobi. Cafdaro was a member of the Nutrition Cluster Review Committee (CRC) for project proposal review and Gedo Food Aid Cluster (FAC) Co-chair at Gedo regional level in 2012.
